Our host for the day, Johnny Gould took the opportunity to introduce himself as ‘a fill in for Mark’ and jokingly compared the two of them, mentioning that the only difference is that people actually watch Mark’s content!
First up on the panel was Wayne Barnes, where Johnny grilled him about his experience being a referee and shared some stories with the audience – some of which might not be suitable to share on here! The banter continued when ambassador Mike Tindall and Ben Kay joined them on stage. Guests got the chance to ask the former England Rugby players their questions and predictions on the game ahead, as well as hear some of the exclusive stories from their rugby careers. Tindall was in the firing line with Johnny and couldn’t escape the fact that he hasn’t yet got his knighthood yet but managed to get Sir Clive Woodward his – Mike, when are you getting this?
It wasn’t just our panel on Johnny’s radar, he scoped the room and picked out some of the famous faces joining us for the day. He welcomed actor Oliver Phelps, heptathlete Kelly Sotherton and for the Welsh supporters – Julian Lewis Jones, a Welsh actor. As well as former England Rugby player Will Greenwood, TalkSPORT presenter Adrian Durham and our motor sport ambassador Johnny Herbert.
After a very interactive panel session with the guys and a full three-course meal, guests grabbed their drinks and made their way to their seating to watch the game - England v Wales - the first Rugby World Cup Warm-up game for the home team.
With tries from B Vunipola, Cokanasiga and Cowan-Dickie, they led the squad to victory over their Welsh opponents. England got off to an energetic start securing their first points of the game putting the visiting team under pressure. England headed into the second half with a 14 point lead and despite Wales best efforts England took victory and crushed Wales' 14-match winning run with 33-19 result.
Buzzing from the game, our VIP clients made their way back to the facility for some post-match refreshments including pies, cakes and... more alcohol. Tindall, Kay and Barnes all returned to the stage where they debriefed on the game, what went well, what didn’t and shared their opinions on the game.
Straight from the playing field was our post-match player, Charlie Ewels. He joined the others on stage and VIP guests took the opportunity to ask the current lock their questions. Here are some of his answers:
Q: How do the younger generation get involved with rugby in the UK as it can be difficult and expensive to get into?
Charlie: Scholarships or programs which are fun to help the communities to find new raw talent.
Q: Who has been your biggest inspiration throughout your career?
Charlie: Father, family and friends
Afterwards, guests continued to enjoy the complimentary bar until it closed and managed to grab selfies, autographs and mingle with our celebrity guests and famous faces in The Green Room before the facility closed.
