History of the St Leger Festival

Named after its founder, the St Leger Stakes’ was discovered by a British soldier called Colonel Anthony St Leger. In addition to a successful career as a soldier in the British Army, St Leger sat as an MP for Grimsby for several years between 1768 and 1774. Two years after this course as MP, he established a race on Cantley Common in Doncaster, which eventually came to be known as the St Leger Stakes.

Widely regarded as the oldest of Britain’s five Classics, the St Leger Stakes is the final leg of the English Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing. The festival itself is considered as being one of the most major events in Doncaster’s social calendar, attended by locals and celebrities alike. Taking place over a span of 10 days, any horse racing fan would be unfortunate to miss this fantastic occasion.
