Formula 1 British GP 2012

Event Review

After qualifying for the 2012 British F1 GP at Silverstone had to be red-flagged and temporarily delayed due to atrociously wet weather, and with the bad weather forecast to continue on the Sunday, many British Formula 1 fans were hoping for rain to give Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button more of a chance after disappointing qualifying results of 8th and 18th respectively.

The McLaren seemed to struggle in the mixed conditions during qualifying, with the car seeming to suit both the slicks and the extreme wet tyres, but lacked pace and grip on the intermediate tyres. This affected Lewis the most in Q3, at which point Jenson was already out of qualifying after a dismal performance in Q1. Force India's Paul di Resta performed admirably in qualifying, but was unable to start the race ahead of team-mate Nico Hulkenberg.

Race day started with disappointment for British fans with Paul di Resta crashing out on the first lap, and unfortunately for the loyal Silverstone spectators, the disappointment was set to continue as Button's lack of pace and poor strategy for Hamilton lead them to 8th and 4th finishes, meaning no podium places to celebrate for the home crowd.

The main excitement of the race was provided by the Australian Mark Webber, who hunted down Fernando Alonso in the final stages of the race to take his second win of the season. Unlike Alonso and Hamilton, Webber and Vettel started on the super-soft tyres, which turned out to be the correct race strategy, as Webber overtook Alonso who was on the slower super softs for his final stint of the race.

Since the race, Pastor Maldonado has been fined for his actions after crashing into the side of Sergio Perez, ending the promising young Mexican's race. After a number of collisions this year and having now been branded a "silly driver" by Perez, Maldonado will now be under constant scrutiny by race officials.

Despite the poor results of the home drivers and the issues caused by the heavy rain, next year's 2013 British F1 GP at Silverstone is sure to be one the the biggest events of the sporting calendar.
